Steve Rounds was just finishing renovations when the Corps of Engineers upped releases at the Oahe Dam.
“I doubled the size of the place,” said Rounds. “And by May 15th we were just getting things rolling with it. By June 1st the new cabins were built. By June 2nd everything is gone.”
The Oahe Marina and Resort, located just downstream from the powerhouse, had over the years become a place for locals and visitors alike to enjoy the view.
“It’s the go-to place in the summer. Everybody in Pierre boats up there. They go up and get their drinks and have meals. They have fun. They enjoy it,” said Rounds. “We just love the area. It’s a beautiful place and it’s really enjoyable. And to have that wiped out; it’s a shock to find out that everything that you have worked for is gone.”
